man, conscious of his own innocence: Si fractus illabitur orbis Impavidum ferient ruinae. (When all the bulwarks of the earth crash suddenly to pieces, he will face without fear the falling fragments.) But since no one has ever found a man such as Horace imagines, the words are empty. True courage is founded altogether in God’s protection; and those who rely upon God can boast not only that they are unafraid, but that they will be safe and secure when ruin overtakes the whole world.
